Why a 3D stereo camera for bin picking loose products?
A product lying loose has no known position or orientation. A 2D camera sees its shape, not its height: the robot has nothing to calculate a pick from. A stereo camera produces a point cloud, from which the gripping point and the approach angle are derived. Balluff's BVS 3D-RV1-0124AC-1111ZZ-001 offers high resolution (12MP) to precisely locate the parts the robot has to pick.
- 12MP color: color separates products that shape alone cannot distinguish.
- Stereo = 2 2D cameras, each of which can be controlled independently.
- Three focal lengths in the catalog (12, 16 and 25 mm), to be chosen according to the working distance.
- Robot-mounting option, with ruggedized lenses.
Psycle does not simply distribute this camera: it integrates it into high-value vision applications. The vision software receives the images and the 3D point cloud, derives the position and orientation of each product in the bin, and sends the robot what it needs to calculate its path in real time.
This is the setup used on the bin-picking line for unpackaged products built with MCA Process: picking products lying loose in bins, then placing them in trays according to a set pattern, with frequent recipe changes.
Before installing
Three points that determine everything else
Choose the working distance before the focal length, not the other way around. Measure the height of the full bin and of the empty bin: it is the difference between the two that settles it, more than the size of the products.
Wet or glossy products reflect light irregularly and leave holes in the point cloud. Test the lighting on site, with the real products, before fixing the setup.
The mount matters as much as the camera. A mount that vibrates as the robot passes shifts the calibration, and that shift shows up in millimeters on the pick.
