Why a polarized LED bar light for inspecting metal or glossy packaging?
On a varnished metal surface or a plastic bottle, lighting comes back as specular reflections: saturated spots that the camera cannot distinguish from a defect, and under which a real defect disappears. The EFFI-FLEX2 polarizer, combined with a crossed filter on the lens, cancels out these reflections and keeps the light diffused by the surface, the light that carries the design and the defects. The bar, for its part, provides the length and strobe power to light the full width of the product as it passes.
- Polarizer option: specular reflections are canceled out by a crossed filter on the lens.
- Strobe mode: enough to make up for the light lost in the two filters.
- Lengths from 60 to 2,900 mm: the bar is sized to the width of the product or the conveyor.
- IP67 and IP69K versions: the same bar in washdown areas.
Psycle does not simply distribute this bar: it integrates it into high-value vision applications. Lighting determines what the camera can see, and the best vision model cannot recover a defect drowned in a reflection. On a glossy surface, it is therefore the first setting, before the camera and before training.
This is the setup, an EFFI-FLEX2 bar with polarizer, that lights the inspection of Massilly's decorated metal tins. On these tins, the design changes with every production order, and the varnish reflects light like a mirror. Once the reflections are canceled out, the image shows the design as it is printed, and the AI can learn to separate a defect from a design element without confusing them with a patch of light.

Three points that determine everything else
The polarizer does not work alone: a second, crossed filter is needed on the camera lens. The two filters absorb a large part of the emitted light; this is where strobe mode and its overdrive come in, rather than a longer exposure time that would blur the moving product.
Effilux recommends the polarizer with the transparent window (TR): a semi-diffuse or opaline window partly depolarizes the light and gives back to the reflection what the filter had taken away.
A polarizer only cancels specular reflections. On a curved surface, such as the body of a bottle or the side of a tin, the angle of the bar relative to the camera is adjusted on the real product, and checked again at every format change.
